Attendees: 34 members and 8 visitors

A covered dish supper was enjoyed by the members prior to the meeting.

Business Meeting

  • President Anne Houck called the meeting to order. She welcomed visitors and introduced them to the group.
  • Minutes from the November 13, 2014 meeting were read and stand as read.
  • Laura Krug is the contact person for memberships. Please see her to pay 2015 dues.
  • Venita Forbes has the license plates ($10), hats ($6) and cookbooks ($6) that are for sale.
  • Meeting notices are distributed via e-mail or regular mail. Members are encouraged to ensure contact information is accurate.
  • Laura Krug has been gathering information for the Golden Achievement Program. The records will be reviewed and the association could receive up to $300 through this program with the state Association.
  • Volunteers are still needed for the state meeting in February. The only requirement is membership to the state association.
  • Anne Houck recently sent out the new state Constitution and Bylaws. Everyone is encouraged to read and review them.
  • The “Practical Beekeeping” class at Stanly Community College is starting January 26, 2015. There are still student slots available.
  • The Apprenticeship program is offered to students between 13 and 18 who are interested in beekeeping. A copy of the program has been provided to one qualifying visitor at this meeting.
  • The Association is still looking for Mentors to serve once the apprentice has been selected.
  • Vicki Galloway will teach a painting your beehive class on January 17, 2015 at Falling Rivers Gallery. The cost for the class is $45 and you will need to bring a hive box.
  • We are going to try to distribute minutes of Association meetings prior to the meetings in place of reading the minutes formally onto the record.
  • The next meeting will be on February 12, 2015.

A panel discussion with Bill Smith as the moderator and JR Whitley, John Edge, Joe Smith and Anne Houck as the panel was held. The panel shared their experiences and knowledge in response to questions from the audience. Topics included pollen sources currently available to the bees, when to start a new hive, how to feed honey, and winter bees compared to summer bees.

Attendees: 40 members; 11 visitors

A covered dish supper was enjoyed by the members prior to the meeting.

President Anne Houck called the meeting to order. She welcomed visitors and introduced the guests and new members.

Information was provided about the North Carolina “Save the Bees” automobile license tags and applications were distributed.

The speaker for this meeting is North Carolina State Bee Inspector Nancy Ruppert. Her presentation was entitled “RU Ready for Spring-Are Your Bees Ready”. The presentation was very informative and included scenario questions for the group.

Business Meeting

Minutes from the January 7, 2015 meeting were distributed in advance of this meeting via e-mail and copies were available for review during this meeting. One update was noted to correct the price of hats for sale to be shown as $6. The Minutes were approved with this correction.

Venita Forbes provided the Treasurer’s Report. Venita Forbes has the license plates ($10), hats ($6) and cookbooks ($6) that are for sale.

The Apprenticeship program selected Christopher Blankenship as the recipient this year. JR Whitley will serve as Christopher’s primary mentor with Joe Smith and Bill Smith available as secondary mentors.

The spring conference for North and South Carolina Associations was held last month in Monroe, NC. The event had over 750 registrations. The summer conference will be July 7-9, 2015 in Lake Junaluska, NC.

The “Beekeeping for Everyone” class in ongoing at Stanly Community College. It is being taught by Bob Blackwelder and had 52 registered attendees.

Vicki Galloway taught a painting your beehive class on January 17, 2015 at Falling Rivers Gallery. The class had 5 participants. If there is interest, another class may be scheduled.

Bob Blackwelder provided the flower report. The maples are currently producing pollen and nectar. Other active plants include henbit and grape holly.

Anne Houck passed around several newspaper articles recently printed concerning beekeeping in the local area.

There is a class tentatively scheduled on Saturday June 13, 2015 in Montgomery County on raising queens.

The raffle included Stone Ground Self-Rising Corn Meal, a Hive Tool, a Hat, a Shirt, Pumpkin Puree, and Elderberry Jelly. These items were generously donated by various members. The 50/50 drawing was won by Donna Barfield.

The next meeting will be on March 12, 2015

April 9, 2015

Stanly County Agri-Civic Center, Albemarle, NC

Attendees: 47 members;  0 visitor

Several members enjoyed a potluck dinner prior to the meeting.

President Anne Houck called the meeting to order. Laura Krug introduced new members.

The speaker for this meeting was Bill Sheppard. His presentation was entitled “The History of Bees”. The presentation was very informative.

Business Meeting

  • Minutes from the March 12, 2015 meeting were distributed in advance of this meeting via e-mail and copies were available for review during this meeting.  The minutes were accepted by unanimous vote.
  • Venita Forbes provided the Treasurer’s Report.  Venita Forbes has the license plates ($10) and cookbooks ($6) and hats ($6)available for purchase.
  • Trudy Jensen is attempting to update e-mail and address records for members.
  • Peter Henkenjohann is working on programs for upcoming meetings.  The Spring Field Day will be held May 16, 2015.  The June meeting will be a regular meeting.  The state conference will be held in Lake Junaluska July 9-11, 2015.
  • Laura Krug is located at the membership table and is collecting membership dues and/or membership applications.
  • Anne Houck recognized and thanked volunteers for setting up the meeting area, the audio/video equipment and organizing the potluck dinner.
  • Anne Houck noted Bill Sheppard’s presentation included a flower report.  She added information about wrapeseed/canola that will be blooming in the next 3 to 4 weeks.  This honey will crystallize in the comb and needs to be removed quickly.  This honey is good to make creamed honey.  As a reminder, crystallized honey can be heated to reverse the crystallization.
  • The raffle included a 2 dozen eggs that were donated by Mark and Ellen McCarter, a Stanly County Beekeeper hat and the 50/50 drawing.

The next meeting will be on June 11, 2015.
